Recognizing student achievement and creativity on Hilton Head
This is the second of three posts that look at a few arts activities that have occurred during Youth Arts Month in South Carolina schools.
The work of advanced and AP students of photography teacher Patty Schoelkopf-Lewis at Hilton Head Island High School was celebrated in an exhibit at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina this month.
Two students got extra attention: Jessica Smith and Adrian Austin. Both are winners of the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Also, Jessica has won additional honors as one of 17 national silver medal photography finalists in the Scholastic arts and writing competition. She joins many other students fromSouth Carolina who were recognized as medalists in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. In ad
dition to this prize, she recently also was selected to attend the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts/YoungArts Week in Miami, where she won the Silver Award for her photography and a $5,000 prize.
According to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina Education staff, this is the third year the Center has awarded an ArtsReach InClass residency with Bluffton photographer Greg Smith to the photography program at Hilton Head High School. This year, as well as last year, he worked with the students over a period of two months on lighting and portraits.
