Connecting with community arts traditions: YAMS, quilts and more….

October 11, 2011

Belton Arts Center Director Betsy Chapman points out the town's new quilt square.

Yams???  Quilt squares on city walls and barns?  See how local arts councils and organizations from the upper regions of South Carolina are building on their local traditions from mountain music to quilting and more.

In Pickens County,  one organization is growing a new crop of Young Appalachian Musicians.  Check out their newsletter  YAM-O-GRAM fall 2011  for a closer look.

And in Belton, a new quilt square  is evidence of this Anderson County’s participation in the  Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail.

In York County, the arts council and local  Clemson Extension agency have partnered to create a new program  called  York County Ag and Art Tour.

What’s an example of tradition and art in your community? Please share.  And while you’re at it, don’t forget the annual Folk Heritage Awards nomination due December 15.
